Billionaire in $4.8 billion divorce battle

No one wants to remain in a situation where they are unhappy, so why should it be any different with divorce? No matter how well things start out, people change and drift apart. In the end, if your marriage isn't working out, sometimes the best thing you can do is to file for divorce. In Missouri, many couples make this very choice every year. Of course, the next step is to decide how you and your spouse will divide your assets.

This is not always the easiest process, especially if you have been married for a long time. You might fall out over sentimental items, or it could just be a matter of pure financial value. Often, marital property simply gets split down the middle, but it's not always that straightforward. Such is the case in the multibillion dollar divorce of a Russian businessman.

A recent ruling has granted the billionaire's ex-wife $4.8 billion, including alimony payments and $146 million in property. However, his former spouse has her sights set on an $88 million apartment in Central Park West, New York. The 10-bedroom penthouse is one of a number of properties purchased by the billionaire in an alleged attempt to keep his money away from his ex-wife.

To prevent the properties, which include two Greek islands, from being transferred, the businessman's former spouse has begun proceedings in three states. The couple, who had been married for 26 years, has been locked in their divorce battle for more than five years. The custody of their younger daughter has been given to her mother, to whom the billionaire is expected to pay $150,000 each month in child support.

Battles like this always capture the attention of the media. However, despite the extreme values of this couple's assets, it is not so different in the divorces that occur all the time in Missouri. It is not always possible to have a smooth divorce, but it is worth seeing it through. An attorney can help you manage the technicalities and assist you in securing a fair settlement, however large or small your assets may be.
