Guns Everywhere Bill is Bad Idea for Missouri

Imagine a loaded gun falling to the floor, perhaps accidentally discharging, in one of the places that currently forbids people from bringing guns in - in your child's day care, at Six Flags, at Ameristar Casino, at your son's or daughter's dorm at the University of Missouri, a Cardinals or Blues game or a place of worship.

This is a letter to the editor of the Post Dispatch written by Cathy Gilbert, a member of Moms Demand Action for Gun Safety. Please call your legislator ASAP Gun smoking.jpgand tell them to vote NO on this law!

As a March 14 editorial, "I Woulda Used It," illustrates, proposed legislation in both the Missouri House and Senate (H.B. 258 and S.B. 121) to allow guns in bars is a bad idea. The editorial was in response to a barroom altercation where the chief of staff to state Sen. Justin Brown, R-Rolla, dropped his loaded pistol. According to the article describing the incident, "Police told the gun owner that it was not a good idea to bring a gun into a bar." What an understatement.

Imagine a loaded gun falling to the floor, perhaps accidentally discharging, in the other venues where the House bill would allow guns - in your child's day care, at Six Flags, at Ameristar Casino, at your son's or daughter's dorm at the University of Missouri or a place of worship.

It is not a good idea to allow guns in any of these places. Those testifying against the bill have included St. Louis County police, the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce, the Lincoln University police chief, representatives from community colleges and the University of Missouri, religious leaders and municipal transit authorities. These are credible voices who see the danger in the legislation. This is the third consecutive year this legislation has been introduced. Apparently, the sponsors think they can wear down their colleagues by proposing guns everywhere legislation again and again. Contact your Missouri legislator and tell them to vote no on these bills.
